BYU French Studies Podcast: Episode 6 - Jean-François Questin, Cultural Attaché

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming Jean-François Questin, the Cultural Attaché to the French Embassy in San Francisco. He spoke on immigration in France. The podcast this week will be the recording of that lecture. This is a great chance to hear from a foreign diplomat on a key issue in French culture today. Please be aware that this lecture is entirely in French. Enjoy!

French Link of the Week

One of the new features that we are bringing to the blog this semester is the French Link of the Week. Each week we will highlight some great French resources online. Hopefully these links will not only help you in you studies, but provide you with interesting resources for the future.

This week our link comes from Professor Cropper, who suggested the following to his FREN 452R students:

"For information about works and authors, instead of Wikipedia, use the Literature Resource Center (available through the BYU library website by clicking on databases A-Z then Literature Resource Center--from off campus your Route Y username and password will be required). Another good resource is the Literary Enclyclopedia (subscription is required for some of the information). These are good sites since they are written by known experts in the fields they discuss."

If you have any suggestions for a French Link of the week, please email them to the blog team at byufrenchstudies@gmail.com

Presidential Elections in France

The French presidential elections are under way, and the 12 candidates have their respective campaigns under way. Front runners Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal are joined by the controversially uber-conservative Jean-Marie Le Pen in the race to be the next Président de la République.

FS Logo Tee Colors

After some research into this year's hot spring colors, we've decided on the colors for the new French Studies Tees. There will be four different color combinations (as seen below): two for guys and two for girls. And here is something else that all the FS students of the female gender will appreciate: the girls tees are actually printed on girls tees, not just the regular unisex tees you've seen in the past. We've opted for a more fitted tee in the hopes that everyone will not only enjoy wearing their FS Tee to spread the word, but because they look so darn good in them too!

Here's a look at the color choices that will be available (hopefully sometime next week):

Girls
Lipstick Red Logo on Aqua Tee

Sky Blue Logo on Raspberry Tee

Guys
Tarragon Logo on Army Tee

Sky Blue Logo on Asphalt Tee

Vendredi Vidéo

  • We thought it might be fun to kick this holiday weekend off with an entertaining French music video. We'd love to have Vendredi Vidéo every weekend, and we'd like your help.
    • If you've come across and great videos during your web surfing adventures, let us know and we'll pick one every Friday to show off. Send your ideas to byufrenchstudies@gmail.com, and make sure they have something to do with French Studies whether it be language, subject matter, etc.

So here then, is this weeks pick from Professor Olivier. It's a "great" French music video for a song which some of you might have heard: Nuit de Folie. Now just sit back, relax, and enjoy what might have been the most brightly colored costuming of the 1980's! The choreography isn't bad either...

Remember to send your Vendredi Vidéo or Mercredi Musique ideas to byufrenchstudies@gmail.com
