Teach English in France-Seize the Day!

Are you one of those people who have always heard about older siblings or friends going off for a year to a foreign country and teaching English to school children there, and wondered how you could get in on that action? If so, and if you are reading this blog because you are interested in French culture, guess what? Tomorrow is your day!

An information meeting will be held tomorrow, Thursday the 8th of October, at 2:00 in 257 HRCB for those who want to learn more about teaching English in France for Fall and Winter semesters 2010-11. The meeting will feature a former program facilitator who will be sharing his experiences with the program and will surely make you want to put your life on hold and hit the open road.

The program is very well established and offers those who participate in it a fantastic experience which includes:

--A completed international internship to enhance your resume

--The opportunity to improve your French through immersion

--Classes offered through BYU to earn credit, allowing you to avoid falling behind

--Paid work, letting you earn money while living abroad

--An authentic experience with French cuisine

--A French city to live in

Could you even ask for more? If so, ask all your questions tomorrow. Don’t forget!

Much Love,
-Pete

Dust off your resumes French majors--your time has come

The BYU Marriot School of Management is hosting a Consulting Night this Wednesday, the 30th, from 6-9. Many major consulting firms will be there, offering students an opportunity to interact with a variety of firms on a personal level. A fine opportunity to inform yourself on the opportunities that exist for employment after graduation. It will take place in the Hinckley Center Assembly Hall in the alumni building.

Here's the best part. The firms that will be present specifically asked the BYU representatives to try and bring out more Humanities majors with foreign language experience and ability. That's you! They don't just want those boring old business majors, they want some spice. And you are the salt of the earth.

I am a member of the Humanities Student Council and our President, John Russell, is a Classics major. He is a big advocate for the empowerment of Humanities majors. He relates often the standard conversation he has with people relative to his major. After stating what it is, people always ask, "what is that?" to which he responds, "we study the classical works of authors such as Plato and Socrates, etc. as well as the language of the source materials. blah blah blah". Then the inevitable question that you all have heard before, I am sure of it, "what are you going to do with that?" John relishes this question, or at least claims to, because it gives him the opportunity to utter his favorite response..."I can do whatever I want with that degree." He firmly believes that, and for that matter, has landed three prestigious interships three years in a row because that entitled attitude is empowering. That is the attitude that you need to carry into this event. Sure you are a Humanities major, sure you are earning a bachelor of Arts, but you know what?...According to Daniel H. Pink, author of "A Whole New Mind", right brainers are going to take over the world, so get in there and make it happen!

You'll only need three things to make this night a success:

1) Business attire

2) A polished and current resume

and most importantly...

3) a knowledge of the attending companies and the consulting field, plus specific questions.

To aid you in this, I will include a list of the companies and a link where you can find more information on them:
