The Voices From Up North

Dr. Sprenger of the BYU French
Department will be giving a lecture
Thursday October 20th at noon.
I'm not sure how many of you know Dr. Anca Sprenger of the BYU French Department, but to help you get to know her better she will be giving a presentation tomorrow.  Her presentation is called "Gabrielle Roy and the Voices of the Great Canadian North", and she will be be giving it in conjunction with the BYU Women's Studies Colloquium.

Here's the run down of the event:
When: Thursday October 20th at noon
Where: 4188 JFSB

I'll be honest I don't know Dr. Sprenger or Gabrielle Roy, so I had to do a little bit of research.  What I found out was actually pretty interesting.  Dr. Sprenger received her bachelor's degree in French Literature from the University of Bucharest, before going on to get her PhD at the University of Southern California.  She has been at BYU for a little while now, and most commonly teaches French Literary Analysis and Introduction to Romanian Literature and Culture.  She is a big fan of French Literature and is currently working on a book about Gabrielle Roy.
Dr. Sprenger will be giving a presentation
about Gabrielle Roy, acclaimed
French-Canadian author.

Gabrielle Roy was born in 1909 in Manitoba, Canada.  She received her education at Saint Joseph's Academy before becoming a rural school teacher.  She lived in Europe for a few years, before being forced out during the outbreak of the second World War.  While in Quebec she wrote her first book Bonheur d'Occasion.  She continued writing through out her life, before passing away in 1983.  Since her death she has had several schools in Canada named after her, as well as having one of her quotes being printed on the back of the Canadian $20 bill.

This should be a very interesting presentation, and I hope you all come out to support Dr. Sprenger!
