Here are three French bands you need to know about:
Phoenix
Phoenix is a French alternative rock band started during their childhood by Thomas Mars, Deck D'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz in the suburb of Versailles. The group draws elements from an eclectic 80's upbringing, which ends up producing a rock-synth sound. Their touring start came through the seedy French bar circuit, doing covers ranging from Hank Williams to Prince! After a couple years, they released some of their original stuff with their won label. Another success story from humble origins--Phoenix now enjoys international fame.

Poney Express
Poney Express is a folk rock duo formed by Anna (previously singer for the French band Tétard) & Robin Feix (Bassit for Louis Attaque). Influences from the likes of the Violent Femmes and Belle & Sebastien are evident; the music falls somewhere between dreamlike and fantastic, cinematic and musical. Unlike their Versailles-grown counterparts, Pheonix, the sing in French. Their debut LP, "Daisy Street" was recorded in Cardiff in August 2007 with Charlie Francis.

Plastiscines
The Plastiscines are an all-female French rock band who perform mostly in English. The band consists of: Katty Besnard (singer/guitar), Marine Neuilly (guitar), Louise Basilien (bass), Anaïs (drums) and former drummers Caroline and Zazie Tavitian. They formed in 2004 after meeting at a Libertines concert.
In addition to the Libertines, the band's influences include the White Stripes, the Strokes and, from an earlier generation, the Kinks and Blondie. Their name derives from the phrase, "plasticine porters with looking glass ties" in the Beatles' song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", on the 1967 album Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The Plastiscines are one of several Parisienne teenage bands, referred to collectively as les bébés rockers. They have released two LP's--LP 1 in 2007 and About Love in 2009.
