Haiti

If you don’t know what has been going on in Haiti the last month or so, you’ve probably been living under a rock. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and devastated the capital city Port-au-Prince. Reportedly more than 150,000 people have died killed and buried later in mass graves, although the exact number was difficult to determine and the reported number fluctuates, and a large number are homeless. Chaos and unwarranted, unchecked violence has sadly been taking place as well. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has experienced political violence throughout its history. The country’s violent and impoverished past has left it helpless in face of this recent crisis. Billions of dollars worldwide (including millions through LDS Philanthropies) has already been donated and well as countless hours.

Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent nation in the Americas. It is one of only two independent nations in the Americas (along with Canada) that designate French as an official language; the other French-speaking areas are all overseas départements, or collectivités, of France. Because of these facts, and in light of the recent catastrophic quakes in the country, I thought it would be fitting to fill you in on what the Mother Land is doing/saying about all this.

Here are some links to follow to fill yourself in on what’s taking place in France:
