The Passion of Joan of Arc

Salut à tous!

I hope you all had a great weekend are ready for more francophone excitement.

This week, the International Cinema is showing The Passion of Joan of Arc. Now, I've never seen it, but I hear good things. I could make up things about it if you like. Just let me know, I'll create awards and give it to the film. Seriously though, this is a classic silent film about Joan of Arc. If you don't know who Joan is, please do yourself a favor and don't admit that to anyone; just go see the film, and get filled in that way. I will let you know, however, that she is not only an official Saint in the Catholic Church, but probably one of the most famous and legendary people EVER among the French. I've got some reviews, trailers, and show times below. I've left the other films this week in with the showtimes, in case any of them catch your fancy. Remember, the cinema is in: SWKT 250.

Carl Theodor Dreyer's acclaimed masterpiece remains one of the most staggeringly intense films ever made. It deals with the final stages of Joan's trial and execution and is composed almost exclusively of close-ups: hands, robes, crosses, metal bars, and (most of all) faces. The face we see most is Joan's and it's hard to imagine a performer evincing physical anguish and spiritual exaltation more palpably. It's magisterial cinema, and almost unbearably moving. 1928 | directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer | silent | 82 minutes | black & white

What people are saying:

"Dreyer's film remains among the most strikingly unusual cinema you're ever likely to see." Ken Hanke, Mountain Xpress

"Dreyer's radical approach to constructing space and the slow intensity of his mobile style make this "difficult" in the sense that, like all the greatest films, it reinvents the world from the ground up." Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

"It is the gifted performance of Maria Falconetti as the Maid of Orleans that rises above everything in this artistic achievement." Mordaunt Hall, New York Times
