This week we have another fantastic French film at the international cinema: He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not (or in the French: À la folie... pas du tout). I can't plug this film enough, it is my favorite French film. If you really want to have a good time, don't read the synopsis beneath (though I know you're going to anyway) and go with ZERO knowledge of the film. It will blow you away. But, alas, I know that some of you don't want to take me at my word, so I've included all sorts of things beneath for you to evaluate: trailers, ratings on webites, etc... I wish I could say I really hunted this all down for you, but I simply copy and pasted it from the email I got with this information. All right, hope to see you at the international cinema this week. Showtimes are below. Oh, and yeah, Lawrence of Arabia is also showing. But this is a French blog. So go see that too if you want, it's good; but not blogging about that.
With the streets of Bordeaux as backdrop, this thriller paints a picture of love gone awry. Angelique (Audrey Tautou aka "Amelie"), an artist and student, is in love and claims that her paramour, Luic is just as enamored with her. But as friends point out, Luic is hardly worthy of her enduring affection: as a married father to be, he invariably fails to show for their intricately planned meetings. The film tells the same story twice: once from her perspective and once from his. 2002 | directed by Laetitia Colombani | French | 92 minutes | color
What people are saying:
"Wickedly clever." Rita Kempley, Washington Post
"It's difficult to overstate how much of a rare find this movie is. Colombani and her cast remind us that the best thrillers are built upon superb writing and strong acting." James Berardinelli, ReelViews
"This genre-busting movie has the appearance of a love story but morphs into a thriller, told cleverly in a nonlinear style. Think "Sliding Doors" crossed with "The Sixth Sense," with a little "Memento" thrown in." Claudia Pulg, USA Today
"Mercifully there's more Hitchcock than Lacan in this slickly enjoyable little number, which cannily plays off the ingénue image of "Amélie's" Audrey Tautou." Ella Taylor, LA Weekly
