La Fontaine's influence has extended from the 17th century all the way to Youtube. A contemporary of Molière and Racine, La Fontaine's work was well-received during his life; he enjoyed the patronage of Louis XIV's Suprintendent of Finances Nicolas Fouquet (before the latter fell out of favor with Louis XIV), and received good reviews from Madame de Sévigné.
Today his Fables (which can be read in French or English here) are known the world over, and fans young and old have put their own retellings on Youtube. This is a charming animated version of Le corbeau et le renard. As cute as that selection is, though, this video has to take the cake, or the fromage as the case may be. Enjoy.
